As the weather cools down and days get shorter, many dog owners start to wonder if their grooming routines should change as well. Some common myths make people think their dogs need less grooming this season, but in reality, winter can be just as important as any other time for keeping your dog’s coat and skin healthy! We’re busting the top 5 winter grooming myths to help your pup stay comfortable, cozy, and well-groomed all season long.
Myth #1: “Dogs Don’t Need Grooming in Winter Because Their Fur Keeps Them Warm”
Busted! It’s true that a dog’s coat provides natural insulation, but grooming is still essential in winter to maintain warmth. Regular grooming helps to remove loose, dead hair and prevents matting, which can trap moisture and lead to skin issues. Mats can actually make your dog colder by pulling on the skin and reducing air circulation in the coat. Regular grooming keeps their coat in top shape, allowing it to do its job in keeping them warm.
Myth #2: “Bathing My Dog in Winter Will Make Them Sick”
Busted! Bathing your dog during the colder months won’t make them sick, as long as you take a few precautions. If you’re bathing them at home, always dry them thoroughly, especially if they’ll be going outside soon after. Warm water baths are a great way to keep your dog’s coat clean, prevent itchy winter skin, and remove dirt or salt from winter walks. Just be sure to use lukewarm water, a good dog shampoo, and dry them with a towel or blow dryer on a low, warm setting. At the Beds-N-Biscuits grooming center, we always focus on getting our pups dry and floofy at the end of their spaw day to make sure they are comfortable on the ride home.
Myth #3: “Dogs Don’t Shed as Much in Winter, So Grooming Isn’t Necessary”
Busted! While some dogs may shed less in winter, many shed year-round, and their undercoat can thicken as they prepare for colder weather. Brushing regularly removes dead hair and helps distribute natural oils, keeping your dog’s skin and coat healthier. Skipping brushing can lead to tangles, and matting, which can be uncomfortable for your pup and hard to manage if left too long. Not to mention, it’s a messy indoor experience when you haven’t taken care of brushing them regularly. Your vacuum will thank you too!
Myth #4: “Short-Haired Dogs Don’t Need Grooming in Winter”
Busted! Even short-haired dogs benefit from winter grooming. Brushing helps with skin health, while regular baths and nail trims are still important to prevent cracked paw pads or painful nails. For short-haired dogs, winter grooming also allows you to check for any dry or irritated skin that may need attention. Just because their coat is short doesn’t mean it doesn’t require care.
Myth #5: “My Dog’s Paws Don’t Need Special Attention in Winter”
Busted! Winter weather can be rough on your dog’s paws, especially if they’re walking on icy or salted surfaces. Snow, ice, and salt can dry out or irritate their pads, sometimes even causing cracks. Regular grooming should include checking and cleaning their paws, trimming fur between their toes, and applying a pet-safe paw balm to keep them protected. Consider wiping your dog’s paws after walks to remove any residue from salt or chemicals used on sidewalks.
