Getting Your Dog Summer-Ready

As the days get longer and temperatures rise, it’s time to start thinking about how to keep your dog happy and healthy during the summer months. Just like we prepare for the heat with sunscreen and hydration, our furry friends need special care to handle the season’s challenges. Here’s how to get your pup summer-ready!

1. Schedule a Vet Check-Up

A pre-summer vet visit is a great way to ensure your dog is in top shape before the heat sets in.

Ask your vet about:
✔️ Heartworm prevention – Mosquitoes thrive in summer, and heartworms are a serious risk.
✔️ Flea & tick prevention – Warmer weather means more pests, so ensure your pup is protected.
✔️ Allergy management – Seasonal allergies can cause itching, sneezing, and skin irritation.

2. Update Vaccinations & Microchip Info

If your dog will be socializing more at dog parks (or spending time at Beds-N-Biscuits!), or you are taking your pup with you traveling, make sure their vaccines (like rabies, distemper, and Bordetella) are up to date. Also, confirm that their microchip information is current in case they get lost.

3. Grooming for Summer Comfort

A well-groomed dog is a comfortable dog! Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and prevents matting, especially in long-haired breeds. If your dog needs a summer trim, make sure not to cut their coat too short—it protects their skin from sunburn. If you have questions about what would be best for your specific pup, please ask one of our amazing groomers for advice.

4. Hydration & Paw Care

Dogs can get dehydrated quickly in the heat. Keep fresh water available at all times, and consider carrying a collapsible bowl on walks. Also, check their paws—hot pavement can burn sensitive pads. Try the “five-second rule”: If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pup! 5. Watch for Overheating Signs

Dogs can overheat easily, especially brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds like pugs and bulldogs. Watch for:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Lethargy or confusion
⚠️ Bright red gums
If you notice these signs, get your pup into a cool area, offer water, and call your vet if symptoms persist.

6. Pool & Water Safety

Not all dogs are natural swimmers! If your pup loves water, introduce them gradually and consider a doggy life vest for safety. Always supervise water playtime, whether it’s a pool, lake, or the ocean.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your dog safe and comfortable during the summer months. With the right health care, grooming, and safety measures in place, your pup will be summer-ready and able to enjoy all the sunshine and adventures of the season!
