Wildfire Season & Your Dog: What Every Pet Parent Should Know

If you’ve lived in Colorado for more than five minutes, you know wildfire season isn’t an “if”—it’s a “when.” While we’re all pretty good about keeping an eye on air quality and weather alerts for ourselves, our dogs are counting on us to do the same for them.

At BNB, your dog’s safety is always our top priority—so we’re breaking down exactly what you need to know to keep your pup safe, comfortable, and prepared during wildfire season.

Smoke Isn’t Just a Human Problem

If the air looks hazy or smells like a campfire, it’s not a great day for your dog to be outside. Dogs are just as affected by smoke as we are—sometimes more. All that sniffing they love? It means they’re pulling more air (and pollutants) into their lungs.

Watch for signs of smoke irritation:

  • Coughing or gagging

  • Red or watery eyes

  • Lethargy or unusual fatigue

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Reduced appetite

If you notice any of these, it’s time to head indoors and, if symptoms persist, check in with your vet.

Know When to Skip Outdoor Play

We get it—your dog lives for daycare, walks, and playtime. But on high smoke days, less is more. On poor air quality days, be sure to keep walks short and slow, and skip high-intensity exercise. Consider opting for indoor enrichment (think puzzles, training games, or a little hide-and-seek). At BNB, we closely monitor air quality and adjust outdoor playtime accordingly—because zoomies are only fun when they’re safe.

Be Ready to Move—Quickly

Wildfires can change direction fast, and evacuation orders can happen with little notice. Having a plan in place can make all the difference.

Your dog’s emergency “go bag” should include:

  • Food (3–5 days’ worth)

  • Bottled water

  • Medications

  • Leash, harness, and collar

  • Vaccination records

  • Comfort item (favorite toy or blanket)

  • Recent photo of your dog (just in case)

And if you haven’t already—double check that your dog’s ID tags and microchip info are up to date. Know the steps you should follow if the unthinkable happens and your dog goes missing.

We’ve Got Your Back (and Your Dog’s)

Wildfire season can be unpredictable—but your dog’s care doesn’t have to be. At BNB, we take extra precautions during smoky or high-risk days. This includes monitoring air quality in real time, adjusting outdoor play and exercise when needed. When necessary, we can provide safe, supervised indoor enrichment. And of course we keep a close eye on every dog’s comfort and behavior. If you’re heading out of town, navigating a busy schedule, or just want peace of mind knowing your dog is in a safe, controlled environment, we’re here for you. Because at the end of the day, they’re not just pets—they’re family. And family deserves to be safe, no matter what’s in the air.
